Severna Park acting duo Pete and Julie Garvey are eager to open Stage & Screen Studios, their new 4,500-square-foot performance space in Millersville. Local youth and teens who are interested in exploring onstage, on camera or behind-the-scenes creative expression in all aspects of theater and television are sure to find plenty of inspiration and experienced coaching in one location.

By offering intensive television and theatrical acting classes, workshops and performance opportunities to all area middle school and high school students, the Garveys’ goal is to lead students through the dynamics of theater and television performance and production. In doing so, they hope to foster youth creativity, confidence and self-esteem.

“We are fortunate to be working in the dynamic world of performance and entertainment for so long,” said Julie Garvey. “Certainly, it is a compliment when we are recognized for our work, but ultimately we are most proud of motivating others, especially the next generation, to take a chance at letting their star shine!”

Pete Garvey began acting at Severna Park High School and studied Shakespeare at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Julie studied dance throughout her youth and received a degree in dance at Radford University in Virginia.

At Severna Park High School, Pete was the technical director of the first Rock ‘N’ Roll Revival, working closely with then-director Tom McKown to launch what has become a must-see tradition. Pete is credited with performing the first song, “Rock Around The Clock,” in the inaugural Rock ‘N’ Roll Revival, available on YouTube, and starring as Conrad Birdie in “Bye Bye Birdie.”

Today, with two children at Severna Park Middle School, Pete is part of the SPMS theater group, leading the students in teleprompter classes and onstage emcee direction for the talent shows. Julie has served as treasurer for the Spartan Lyrical Society.

“The SPMS theater and music groups are exceptional,” said Julie. “Happily, our area elementary schools all support youth productions, too.”

The Garveys hope that, given the area’s proximity to three major cities, there is wonderful potential for visibility and outreach for local performers.

“With Discovery Channel (where Pete has appeared on Investigation Discovery, American Heroes, History Channel and the Military Channel) based in Silver Spring and our relatively close proximity to New York,” said Julie, “we have direct pipelines to full-on professional theater and television opportunities and numerous casting agencies to share with Anne Arundel County youth.

“Severna Park’s most definitely got talent,” Julie continued. “The community is full of truly gifted actors, singers and dancers, and we look forward to working with all of them in one capacity or another. We certainly hope that through Stage & Screen Studios, we will discover and foster writers, directors and producers as well. All of these roles are essential, and it only takes one opportunity to bring someone’s creativity to life. Just ask J.K. Rowling!”

Stage & Screen Studios is located at 215 Najoles Road in Millersville. For more information on Pete and Julie Garvey, Stage & Screen Studios, or to enroll in classes, visit or the “Stage & Screen Studios” Facebook page.
