What You Need To Do, Bring And Consider

Even if you’re only warming up to the prospect of plunging right now, you can show up to Sandy Point State Park looking like a seasoned professional polar bear. Here are our tips:

Choose Your Plunge Attire

It might be a cold day, but you should still dress as if you’re going swimming. A bathing suit is ideal — having bulky or heavy layers might keep you warm when you’re dry, but they’ll lose their ability to insulate once they get wet, and they’ll weigh you down when you’re trying to get out of the water.

A bathing suit can be worn underneath warmer layers that you remove just before the Plunge. It will also be easier for you to dry off and get back into something warm and dry. However, participants are not allowed to wear wetsuits — that’s cheating.

You can even show off your Plunge spirit by putting together a costume, especially if you’re going with a group of people — but remember to avoid anything heavy or bulky that will slow you down when you’re wet.

Pack Your Bag

Be sure to pack a small, lightweight bag with:

-A towel: To dry yourself. (Duh!)

-A change of clothes: Heated tents will be available for changing into dry, warm clothes.

-Plastic bags: To hold your wet bathing suit after you change.

-Your fundraising money: You’ll give this to the people at the registration table. Cash, checks, money orders and credit cards will all be accepted.

Bear in mind that the event committee and Special Olympics Maryland are not responsible for personal belongings that are lost or stolen during the course of the event. Leave your bag unattended in the changing tent or on the beach at your own risk. (Better yet, keep it with you or have a friend hold onto it.)

Transportation And Parking

Parking at Sandy Point State Park (1100 East College Parkway, Annapolis, 21409) on the day of the event will be by permit only. Parking passes are available for $35 but are limited to the first 100 purchasers. Visit www.plungemd.org to purchase a pass.

A free Polar Express shuttle system will be available, and the event committee encourages all plungers and spectators to use this fast, efficient mode of transportation to and from the park. Prizes will even be given out to shuttle riders all day long. Beginning at 8:00am and continuing until 5:00pm, Polar Express shuttles will be transporting passengers to Sandy Point State Park from Navy Marine Corps Stadium and Anne Arundel Community College.

For the comfort of all passengers, event staff reserves the right to deny shuttle service to anyone who appears drunk or disorderly. Undercover “bus marshals” will circulate throughout the shuttle routes all day long to enforce the regulations. (So behave yourselves, OK?)

Tailgating

Yes, you’re allowed to tailgate at Plunge! However, tailgaters must follow the rules and regulations as outlined by the Maryland Park Service:

-No alcoholic beverages outside the designated area

-No glass

-No firewood

-No open flames

-No coals (only propane grills are permitted)

-No littering
